Oingo Boingo – “Insanity”

Oingo Boingo‘s farewell performance of “Insanity” at the Universal Amphitheater in 1995, juxtaposed against their performance on The Gong Show almost 20 years earlier in 1976, vividly illustrates the band’s transformation over time. Oingo Boingo - Insanity (Single CD)While the band name  ”Oingo Boingo” is familiar to most, and their longer and more formal name” The Mystic Knights of the Oingo Boingo” may be known to some, many have not actually listened and enjoyed the complex multi-layered musical journey that the Mystic Knights guide you through. From humble beginnings, the band originated as a performance art group, which later morphed into a ska-infused New Wave octet, which later transitioned into an alt-rock group. The shifts in their musical style are reflected in changes in their name – which, after several shortenings in the band’s lifetime, was finally reduced to “Boingo“.  Still, different stages of their transition have left permanent impacts. The smash popularity of “Weird Science”, their performance on  The Gong Show, and their presence in the  film The Forbidden Zone, not only left us with fantastic creative works to enjoy and reflect upon, but also left a lasting impact on music culture as a whole.
