THE BRONX – Mariachi El Bronx

MARIACHI EL BRONXThe Bronx – “Mariachi El Bronx”. ¬†August 25, 2009 on Swami Records.

This record is one of my top 25 records of 2009. The Bronx have put English lyrics to traditional Mariachi music in their latest work, “Mariachi El Bronx”. It’s an unexpected move for a cranky punk band, and they have done quite well. This album makes mariachi music much more accessible to a broader audience. The songs are engaging and enjoyable. Well executed by the musicians, it plays like an honest translation of the spirit of Mariachi in English. This band’s bold move also broadens the definition of punk quite a bit… but I judge not. “Mariachi El Bronx” is a great record – plain and simple. Add it to your collection and you will find yourself playing it often.
“Mariachi El Bronx” features Vincent Hidalgo, son of the Grammy-award-winning artist David Hidalgo (Los Lobos and Latin Playboys), Alfredo Ortiz (Beastie Boys), and various members of Los Tigres Del Norte. The album was produced by John Avila
